A love letter to mosquitoes

My dearest friendly neighborhood mosquito,

I wanted to thank you so much for all you have done for my family and me. You deserve to be recognized for your diligence to watch over my house and keep us safely inside our homes during the summer months.

I can't tell you how grateful I am for your determination to keep my children from playing outside on summer evenings. Sure, they may miss their friends, swing set and the ice cream man, but really, who needs that stuff anyway? We prefer our children to be locked inside the house, staring blankly at computer and television screens and getting their vitamin D solely from their milk. You have kept our kids safe by keeping them outside and away from fun, summer activities. For that, I will be forever grateful.

I'm so glad that you've always reminded me that you're keeping watch over my backyard. When I think maybe you've taken a break from watching over us, you send me cute, reminder love bites that never itch at all! No, in fact, they tickle. And I love that. Your reminders that you aren't ever going to leave me, no matter what, bring a certain peace to my mind. It's nice to know that there are still those relationships out there that are completely unbreakable.

Even though I have loved our times together and having you around brings a certain cheer into my heart that I know I'll never find with anyone else, I'm sorry to say that I'm going to have to ask you to move on. The truth is that it isn't you, it's me. I just don't think I can give you what you want any longer. I have given you plenty of my blood, sweat and tears – but mostly just blood. And even though I've tried to keep up with feeding you my blood, I just can't do it anymore. I've got children to raise and a wife to provide for. I'm sure you understand.

I'm sorry, but this is the end of our relationship. Please try to understand that none of this is personal. Our time together has been memorable, but I think we both knew it would have to come to an end eventually. I wish you the best of luck on wherever life's journey may take you.

With love,
Your human
